Pakistan's 3G/4G Mobile Broadband Market Growth

In April 2014 Pakistan Telecommunication Authority auctioned 3G and 4G licenses. These platforms are meant to provide high speed mobile broadband internet services. After getting authorized Mobile Telcos started their operations with providing different versatile services over their new platforms.

In July 2015, total 3G and 4G subscribers were 14.36 million with 98.26% 3G platform and 1.74% 4G platform penetration. Since Jul-15 to May-16 total subscribers reached to 29.74 Million with 15.13 Million net additions at an average growth rate of 7.37% per month.

Mobilink is Pakistan’s first Mobile operator and It started 3G services with 3.95 Million customers with a highest rate of average growth 8.88% per month. Its subs touched 9.26 Million in May-16 with maximum number of 3G subscribers as compare to other competitors which are 31.13% of the total current volume of 3G Subs stands at 1st.

Telenor Pakistan stood at 2nd with a total number of 8.27 Million 3G Subscribers. The average growth rate of its customers is 5.8% per month. Though Telenor’s subscribers were 4.69 Million in the starting and were more than Mobilink, but, their pace of growth was slower. Percentage share of its customers up till May-2016 is 27.83%.

China Mobile Company Pakistan (Zong) provided both 3G and 4G platform services to their customers and became the Pakistan’s 1st 4G Mobile operator. In starting, Zong’s 3G subs were 3 Million and grown with 6.7% average growth rate per month and reached to 5.9 Million in May-16. 4G subs progression was 5.3 % per month and totaled 0.63 Million by 1.69% in May-16. So, total Zong’s subs increased both 3G and 4G platforms with 7.34% growth rate to 6.55 Million and it became the 3rd Mobile operator to achieve the highest number of 3G customers and 1st operator with highest 4G customers, which jointly are 22.03% of the total.

Ufone at 4th started the 3G operations with 2.61 Million Subs and touched 5.32 Million with 2nd highest average growth rate of 7.38% per month. Total share of its subscribers is 17.90 % and is continue to grow.

Warid Telecom introduced its only 4G services after all the operators, and is currently serving 0.33 Million 4G subscribers with an average growth rate of 1.05% per month with total share of 1.11% of the Mobile Broadband sector. But, Vimpelcom Russia parent of Mobilink has acquired Beeline Russia parent of Warid Telecom. They are planning to share the technological platforms that will uplift them at a level to give strong competition to Zong and other Mobile operators.
